The design relies on the adaptive reuse of an existing load-bearing structure to reduce costs, while the needs of the owners are met unconditionally, with a distinctive feel of refuge within the built environment. The building comprises two levels, with a ground floor including the main living spaces in an open-plan arrangement, and a first level with four bedrooms and bathrooms.
Both floors keep their visual communication through a patio in the existing structure, allowing natural light to penetrate the interior and creating a current of ventilation through openings on the roof slab. Concurrently, horizontal and vertical permeability moderates the overwhelmingly introvert character of the design, due to the near adjacency with the urban fabric.
Regarding the building volume morphology, the first level either protracts or recedes inwards, creating different functional zones according to orientation and shading (barbeque, pergola, jacuzzi). The design is complete with covered outdoor spaces and a swimming pool at the extension of the living areas.
Materials have been kept in white and earthy tones, with bare concrete on the facades accentuating the juxtaposition of old and new. This highlights the surrounding greenery, while on the inside darker shades moderate the abundant natural light.
